About “Kazakhfilm” – the major film platform in Kazakhstan which does production and postproduction of feature films, documentaries and animation.
The film studio was founded in 1934 and was named Almaty film chronicle studio back then. In 1936 the first documentaries were made. In 1941 the Almaty film studio had merged with Russian “Mosfilm” and “Lenfilm” studios which have been evacuated to Kazakhstan in wartime. The two joint organizations made one Central United Film Studio. The CUFS had functioned in Almaty up to 1944 and issued 80% of all local features during the war. In 1960 the Almaty film studio was rebranded as “Kazakhfilm” studio. In 1984 the studio added the name of the prominent Kazakh filmmaker Shaken Aimanov, to its brandname.
The average decennial dynamics of ‘Kazakhfilm”’s production is as follows: 60s – 3 feature films, 70s – 4 films, 80s – 7 films, 90s -3 films. Within the period between 2000 and 2008 – 4 films. And only recent annual average number is 7-10 films.
Within the independence years (1991 – 2016) “Kazakhfilm” studio made 136 feature films (incl. 6 TV features); 73 short films; 258 documentaries (incl. 8 documentary series); 67 animation films (incl. 1 animation series and 1 animation feature).
Since 2008 to today, more than 200 films made by “Kazakhfilm” took part in more than 220 film festivals and international screenings in 60 countries of the world.
