Science fiction action film “Hunting the Phantom” hits theaters

“Kazakhfilm” movie studio’s first release of this year, Marina Kunarova’s science fiction action film “Hunting the Phantom” opens in theaters on January 30. The film is jointly produced by JSC “Kazakhfilm” named after Shaken Aimanov and MG Production.
The press conference and press screening were held in Almaty on January 29 with the participation of film director Marina Kunarova, film producer Yernar Malikov, actors Nikita Presnyakov, Sanzhar Madiyev and the chief editor of JSC “Kazakhfilm” named after Shaken Aimanov Didar Amantay.
The film tells about the policeman named Timur who is forced to break the law in order to save his beloved one and uncover the conspiracy of a global corporation which tries to gain control of people’s minds.
- It is “Kazakhfilm” studio’s first film premiere of this year and we proud to open it with “Hunting the Phantom” which is techical breakthrough because of its use of the computer graphics. We hope that owing to the film’s dynamic and to the participation of Hollywood stars in it, it will be successfull both at the domestic box-office and internationally, - said chief editor of JSC “Kazakhfilm” named after Shaken Aimanov Didar Amantay.
- First of all I would like to thank the president of JSC “Kazakhfilm” named after Shaken Aimanov Yermek Amanshayev because of his advise for us to make a science fiction film rather than just another action film as we planned before. That is why we decided to surprise our audience and have made sci-fi action film implementing the latest technologies during the filming. I am very grateful to the producers of this film, especially to Yernar Malikov for giving me opportunity to realize this project, - said film’s director and screenwriter Marina Kunarova.
Filmmakers added during the press-conference that for the filming of action scenes they had to hire three different stunt teams. They were Aleksandr Terekhov’s stuntmen who were responsible for the car chase scenes, Kun-Do stunt fighting school headed by Igor Tsay who was working on fight scenes and “Кz3runners” stunt team comprised of Vladimir Bessonov, Segey Starcev and Evgeniy Semonov who were staging parkour stunts in the movie. Most of the stunts actors performed themselves. To achieve that, they had to undergo hard training for six months.
Actors Sanzhar Madiyev and Nikita Presnyakov told journalists how they got involved with this project and shared their experience working with Hollywood actors like Armand Assante known for “The Mambo Kings”, “1492: Conquest of Paradise”, “The Odyssey” and “American Gangster” and Kristanna Loken from “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”.
The shooting took place in Kazakhstan and USA for about four months. The international film crew consisted of experienced filmmaking professionals from USA and Kazakhstan.
The film was shot on RED Epic camera by American cinematographer Curtis Petersen whose filmography includes more than 90 films. Over 2500 visual effect shots were created by international VFX team comprising supervisors from Kazakhstan, Canada, Turkey and Italy. Film score was composed by talented Kazakh composer Arman Mukatay. Bopesh Zhandayev whose previous credits include “Shal” and “Virtual Love” served as the production designer for this film
